Douglas with Dr. Graham Peck, Wepner Distinguished Professor of Lincoln Studies at UIS. Stephen A. Douglas was an American politician and lawyer from Illinois. He served as a senator, secretary of state, and an Illinois Supreme Court Justice. Most remember him as a political rival of Abraham Lincoln's and one of two Democratic Party nominees for president in the 1860 presidential election, which was won by Republican Abraham Lincoln.
