Next to the statues of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass in Susan B. Anthony Square Park (just a few houses down from the National Susan B. Anthony House and Museum), we will be welcoming local high schoolers to read excerpts from Anthony's speech entitled, "Declaration of Rights of the Women of the United States by the National Woman Suffrage Association" which was given on July 4, 1876 for the bicentennial and excerpts from Douglass's speech "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" speech given on July 5, 1852. We will be using these two primary source documents to commemorate the struggles for equality that our nation has faced over its 250-year history, and to consider the present state of our nation. After the readings, we will invite public attendees to fill out a card for our 3D wish wall entitled "250 More: What Work Does America Have to Do?" to encourage reflection and conversation about the work still left to be done for human rights, equality, and democracy in the 250 years ahead. This wish wall will be kept and displayed in the Anthony Museum after our event.
